THEATRICAL STYLES

Nicola uses numerous theatrical styles as a means to teach curriculum.  The following are some examples of styles to choose from.

SHADOW THEATRE

Using a giant white sheet, a powerful light, coloured lighting gels, cardboard
cutouts and student silhouettes, an entire class can create a physical story to
music.  To put together a shadow play takes tremendous amounts of teamwork
and choreography as well as a dynamic physical vocabulary.

PERFORMANCE CREATION

Instead of having one person as playwright, a group creates a story by exploring various physical worlds that lead to a narrative.  This method encourages students to work as a team.

CLOWN AND MASK

Starting with full character mask, students can learn to communicate with body language.  They can then graduate to half mask, learning to find their character's voice.  Students can also delve into the world of Commedia D'el Arte.  Clown has been described as the world's smallest mask and is a complex but rewarding style of theatre.   All of the above are excellent tools to create dynamic characters.  This theatrical style often allows introverted students to shine.

RHYTHM

Teaching students basic rhythms on percussive instruments or found objects and combining it with text and movement.

IMPROVISATION

A helpful tool to create story and develop listening skills; Improvisation teaches confidence and positive teamwork.

PHYSICAL THEATRE

Developing story in a physical world, incorporating tableau. Physical theatre can also create character through movement-based exercises such as Laban and Animal work.

PUPPETRY

Creating story with the use of marionettes, Punch and Judy style puppets, socks puppets, etc.  Children can focus on dialogue and creativity.

BLACK LIGHT

A dark room, a black light, cardboard and costumes painted with black light paint create an out of this world performance that requires teamwork, choreography and tons of creativity.

RADIO PLAYS

Students create a story for Radio. They write their scripts, they are the voices of the characters and they are the Foley artists, creating the sound effects and ambiance.  When the project is complete, the students can keep a recording as
a keepsake.
