ABOUT

AN OVERVIEW

Nicola is an educator, actor, and creator with over a decade of experience working across Canada, England and Italy. Her love for all things theatre has inspired a diverse career, ranging from acting in contemporary and classical theatre, devising and performing theatre with an ensemble of artists, and teaching students of all ages in all setting on all topics imaginable.

FROM CANADA TO THE UK

Nicola’s journey as a professional theatre artist began when she completed her Master of Fine Arts at York University in Toronto then set out to London, where she toured throughout the UK and Italy for five years and co-founded GREEN BEINGS THEATRE, a children’s environmental theatre company.  During her time in England, Nicola performed with or at such companies as THE BATTERSEA ARTS CENTRE, THE OLD VIC THEATRE, THE PLEASANCE THEATRE, THE ARCOLA THEATRE, and THE MIDLANDS ART CENTRE. Whilst living in London, Nicola ventured into the school system, teaching drama to students in primary schools in the inner city, which was an adventure she’ll never forget.  It was a challenging experience that has honed her skills in class discipline and leadership.

THE HERE AND NOW

Since returning to Calgary in 2005, she has continued to educate and perform professionally with numerous local organizations. She is a sessional instructor at the UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY teaching ‘Theatre for Young Audiences’ and is a returning instructor for Theatre Alberta’s ARTSTREK, a drama summer camp for teenagers.  Nicola has been an Artist in Residence at WILLOW PARK JUNIOR HIGH, an Arts-Centered Learning school, for the past five years.  She has also been a guest artist for THE CALGARY HIGH SCHOOL DRAMA FESTIVAL.  Nicola regularly teaches, directs and creates plays for EVERGREEN THEATRE, QUEST THEATRE and TRICKSTER THEATRE.  With regards to her acting career, Nicola has performed for local companies or festivals such as VERTIGO MYSTERY THEATRE, ALBERTA THEATRE PROJECTS, SAGE THEATRE, DOWNSTAGE PERFORMANCE SOCIETY, THE HIGH PERFORMANCE RODEO and THE MAGNETIC NORTH THEATRE FESTIVAL.

When not in the land of theatre, Nicola works at THE CALGARY ZOO as an Educational Interpreter giving conservation talks or leading 'Behind the Scenes' tours such as Elephant Bath-time!
